Yoga & Chiropractic: The Perfect Match

February 21, 2022 by Tish Weikel Leave a Comment

When you think of the perfect pairing, you might think peanut butter and jelly… Sundays and football games… or Jay Z and Beyonce. But we’d like to suggest another excellent pairing: yoga and chiropractic.

Why They’re Better Together

If you ask the majority of people what chiropractic care is all about, they’re likely to tell you it’s to help people with neck and back pain relief. And sure, that definitely applies.

But what many people don’t understand is that chiropractic is about maintaining complete musculoskeletal health. This means ensuring the joints, bones and soft tissues are all healthy, aligned, and playing well together.

When you think about it, this sounds very similar to the goals of yoga, doesn’t it?! Yes, yoga is also very much about maintaining flexibility, balance, joint health, and muscle strength.

Just as chiropractic can help you improve your flexibility, yoga can help decrease back pain. In fact, a study funded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) showed a significant reduction in lower back pain after practicing yoga for only 6 months.

Another study, this one conducted in 2015, found that Iyengar yoga is an effective short-term solution for both neck and back pain.

Finding the Right Chiropractor to Work with You

If you are someone that regularly practices yoga and are interested in adding in some chiropractic care, we encourage you to work with a chiropractor that understands how yoga affects the musculoskeletal system. For instance, it will benefit you to work with someone who understands how different yoga poses have an influence on different muscle activation. In this way, you can really work as a team and ensure your treatment plan takes into account not only your pain issues but also your preferred methods of tackling those issues.

If you are interested in working with a chiropractor that appreciates the benefits of yoga and understands exactly how the practice impacts the body, please give me a call or stop by the clinic to set up a free personalized consultation.
